In beginning most of us hesitate to speak, although we can write and can understand.

One of my friend can understand English, I mostly speak in English with him but he always reply me in native language. What should I do with him, which made him to speak in English?

Please give your opinion or which you applies/applied.

Thank you in advance!

He is  shy and  does not seem to be ready to make an attempt .in acquiring the language.  If puts his right  foot forward  you could  help him

Thanks a lot dear teacher Nadira...I'm trying to make him speak but I couldn't yet....hope I can...

If someone wants to learn to speak a different language, he has to find another learner and practice the language with him. Both of them should have the intention of talking for learning the language, so no one will be shy.

It may be the problem of self-confidence. In this case, the more the beginner speaks the language, the more he will feel confortable with it.

Thanks a lot dear Youri !!

It's not you my 253

Rajesh, First of all try to encourage him while speaking and on behalf me tell him "stay true to your Heart and your principles. You should not be ashamed of what you speak,Find the right friend, who will help you realize your problem while speaking...Good luck on your personal journey to greatness...

Oh...Mukesh, now what can I do...?? I'm trying my best...now I need your help man...

For a novice, it's kind of scaring to speak English. Recalling my own experience, I was laughed by my sister who is 4 years senior to me while singing a English song at junior high school. I have never sung English songs any more since then. Therefore, environment is significant for learners. We should create a warmer, encouraging, safe atmosphere to spur a beginner to speak Englsih. Don't criticize, tease, and satirize what a novice say.

Thanks  a lot Winnie!!

Just like what everyone has already mentioned, there could be hundreds of reasons why people who are able to understand English won't speak it.  And out of those, I think the main reason is because they just simply don't find the reason why they should.  I mean, they are not compelled to speak it.  When you talk to your friend in English, he is not forced to reply to you in English because he is conscious that you both have the same native language.  But see what happens once a native English speaker approaches him.  I bet he will feel obliged to reply in English although he doesn't feel comfortable to do do so.  The same thing in school.  When taking English class, more than likely, a student is required to talk in English during the class to be able to pass.

I may be wrong, but I think your friend lacks the necessity to practice English with you because it's not compulsory, rather it's optional.

Thanks a bunch dear Ohnie. Oh...it's not optional for him but must.

dear brother, it is so simple.......introduce me to him and give us a date for our skype conference...   PRESTO! He will..... in every possible way, try to speak in English!
