because people speak English
Every Tuesday English Club publishes a weekly news report. There is a self study exercise to go with the story.
You can practise your speaking by recording your voice as you read the transcript. Upload your report in the comments below by using a program like Audioboo, or by recording it on your computer and using the paperclip above to upload the MP3 file. You can share your recording each week.
You can also record yourself answering the discussion question. Have fun!
Thank you to all of the advanced learners and teachers who help out in this group!
We use the Interactive Phonemic Chart to help explain different sounds.(Here is a
keyboard for you to type symbols.)
Please take a moment to watch this video. It was produced by the very talented Camelia.

Great work last week everyone! Please give this week's report a try: Japan's Black Widow Sentenced to Death. I'd also be interested in your response to the discussion question. Be careful with the word "circumstantial". It has that seem ending as "financial".
By the way, if any Japanese members can help out with the pronunciation of the "black widow's" name, I would really appreciate it. I spent a long time trying to find out the proper pronunciation, but in the end it was a bit of a guessing game. :) I'd be happy to rerecord it if someone can provide the proper pronunciation that I can practice. Cheers!

Permalink Reply by Mayumi on April 21, 2012 at 3:27 Hi, Raj!
Hehe as you requested me. Here I am...Be ready! LOL!
Nah, of course, you're doing great, my bro! It's a matter of consistent effort of listening and practice and you'll taste the fruits of your hardwork. :)
These are the words I think you may want to refer again to Ms. Tara's recording...
-death
-dating
-pills
...and a short note..hmm I am thinking, I don't know if I'm correct..maybe you have to reduce emphasis on some words. Maybe you could reduce stress on some words like (the, that) and stress should be placed on the content words...Because sometimes it seems that you pronounce the words in isolation (word for word) and not the "thoughts" that should be sticking together..
I apologize if my explanation is vague..:)

Dear Mayumi,
You are so sweet....thanks a bunch !
Keep this work on for me, please ! :-)
Permalink Reply by Patxi on April 21, 2012 at 17:33 Hi Rajesh, good work. But you''ll have to improve some words:
Death, Japanese (stress), sentenced in the first paragraph, but sentenced in the title is ok, your three sounds like threw, your woman sounds like women, hoping, suggested.
Go on like that, continue with phonetics and listen to the BBC. Little by little you'll be able to improve your intonation. Try to focus your eyes in three or four words at the same time while reading instead of going word by word, and them do the same with four or five and go on in the same way... Thank you for sharing.
