Why do you want to learn English?

I am student of MA of economics and I'm going to continue my study in PhD course. Having good mark in the TOEFL is one of the necessary conditions for taking part in PhD entrance exam. In addition, I need to know English language very well if I want to continue my study in another country.
In the beginning, I tried to learn English just for becoming ready for the TOEFL but as time went on, I found a great pleasure in English as mentioned in quotation "Foreign languages open doors to new horizon".
Little by little English changed to one of my best hobbies which was incomparable with the others. I think, by passing the time most of hobbies become repetitious but it is different for English. Each time I found some thing new in it, a special joy can't find in any other hobbies.

What about you? Why do you learn English?

Dear Mimi,

As you mentioned here, my first priority for learning English is to continue my education. But, after studying English for many years, I realized that learning English can help me to understand other cultures and also become familiar with their literature and famous books. Learning a language is in fact to become familar to other people's way of thinking. It has been a great joy for me to know how others thinking and seeing the world.

First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm a student at Banking Academy in Viet Nam. Now my falcuty is Banking and Finances. So I think that Learning English is really necessary for my job in the future.
In addition, English is one of my favorite. I like to watch the programs by English in some channels such as Disney, StarMovie... In another hand, it help me know more about the beautiful sjghts and culture as well as many famous actor in the world.
In shorts, Learning E is never unnecessary.

Dear Mimi! Unfortunately, I can't correct everything you and others write here but "for improving my job" sounds so bad! First, you need preposition "in". Besides, let me give you a few options how to express your mind in this case:

1. in making good carrier
2. in getting a better job
3. in getting promotion

Besides, you should say "the English language", "at the beginning" ( but it is not really good. I would say "At first").

I am a professional in training for TOEFL test. I tought it in the US. I can help you. Do you mean "Master's Degree" by "MS"? Reading your English I would say you are not ready for TOEFL. I am sorry to say that but..... it is the truth.

Dear Mimi, let me tell you my reason for learning English. I have to learn English so that I can be able to communicate with my children in law, because they don't speak my native language. But I have to say apart from that, English's always helpful for me each time I travel abroad, which I do a lot because I like traveling. Most people as my age, they don't want to learn anymore, they said it's difficult for elderly people to learn a foreign language. It's true. At first, I tried hard to learn but after a while, everything seemed to go out of my mind to somewhere :-) I decided to ignore about my poor memory, I accepted the truth that I was a snail in learning, compare to young people, a rabbit. The most difficulty for me is extending my vocabulary, it takes me so many times consulting a dictionary to remember the meaning of a new word, but I don't care. I don't have a good memory but I have a lot of patience and firmness. Now, my English is OK for me, I can converse with my son in law and my daughter in law about everything ( I know I make mistakes but I don't care unless they don't understand me :-) but they do ) So , if you are young, don't waste your time, try to learn English as much as you can when you are young, don't be like me, learning English at nearly sixty years old :-(

hello every body

i want to learn english for several targets because it is the most spread language all over the world so it will help me to :
1/communicate more with foreigners who don't know our religion and correct what the west media said about islam .
2/i want to find a job quickly because here in morocco english help us more to work in many domains.
3/iam inviting peolple from europe or united state to my home in order to improuve my accent and discover their cultures.
4/help me to understand a lot magazines written in english.

Hi, I'm new here. As for me, i like to learn English because of several reasons. I realized that English language is very important. That is why I am here. Hopefully, by joining this group can help me to improve both in written and spoken. Believe or not, when new year comes, I want to be fluent in English.
