About Me

Hello!

It's nice to meet you! Thank you for checking out my page!

My name is Melanie and I am an online English teacher. I have a blog where I help people around the world improve their English. I teach private lessons using an online meeting room as a classroom & Skype to talk to students [at this time I am not taking on any new students].

On my blog I teach pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and I also suggest some study tips. I also like to teach people about life in Canada! I create English video lessons for YouTube, and I use Twitter, Facebook, and MyEC to interact with English learners. Natural interaction with a native speaker gives English learners more confidence, helps them learn more natural English, and helps them practice what they've learned.

I live in Toronto, Canada. I sound American but sometimes my spelling is British. I enjoy helping people improve their English because I know how important English is in the world today. Please feel free to ask questions or add me as a friend!

I am not available to chat or talk on Skype, MSN or Yahoo.

English Tips #4

Zahra asked:

1) Would you please explain how to use the verb "thank"?

*You thank someone for doing something:

I’d like to thank you for the lovely gift!

Don’t forget to thank your guest for coming tonight.

He thanked us for taking him out to dinner.

“Thank” is not a complete sentence!

Instead of saying ‘thank you’, you can also say ‘thanks’:

Thanks for the present!

Also, the correct expression is ‘thank… Continue

The Iceland Volcano

By now, everyone has heard about the volcano that erupted in Iceland on March 20th. It created a massive cloud of ash in the air that stopped air traffic all over Europe. All flights were cancelled for 6 days and thousands of people were stranded all over the world!

The name of the volcano is Eyjafjallajokull. It is not an English word & most English speakers cannot pronounce it! (You can learn how to pronounce it… Continue

Almost every day someone asks me “How can I improve my English?”

Unfortunately, there is no magic answer. The only answer is practice, practice, practice! I tell my students to make English a part of your life:

- listen to & read the news in English (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines)

- listen to English music (and read the lyrics at the same time!); try to sing along to practice pronunciation!

- watch English TV shows & movies; watch them with English… Continue

Thank you everyone for your feedback on last week’s writing corrections. It sounds like people find it useful, so I will continue with it!

Rosalinda asked about words with ‘ie’ and ‘ei’. In English, all school children have to learn this rhyme:

I before E, except after C! ” (of course, there are always exceptions – like their), but it helps to remember the correct spelling:

perceive, receive, receipt, deceive

believe, belief, thief, relief,… Continue

Hello, Melanie, Are you a teacher?
Nice to meet you

Now, I'm reading novel of Dan Brown, Deception Point, did you ever read it?
I think it's terrific, but I read very slow because I'm not native english. So I read it each unit in two rounds, first, I read without dictionary, and second use it to find meaning of the unknown word. Do you have suggestion to me?

Thanks...
I'll contact you again...
Now, I'll read that more...
Happy on weekend :-)
