Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise!

Hi dear friends!

I was on Nida's page where among her favorite quotations, my attention was

drawn to a famous saying.

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy , wealthy and wise !

Before, I'd heard it from one of my lovely English teachers. He also told us

another form of this saying for kidding:

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man a rooster in disguise!

Just for fun!

Anyway, let's talk about the original saying; about going to bed early at night and

waking up early in the morning.

If you like the topic, try to answer the following questions, OK?

  • Do you stay awake till late at night? Why?
  • Do you like staying/sitting up late at night? Why?
  • Which one do you like more for your sleep time? Mornings or nights? Which one do you think is better for your health and wealth ?!
  • Do you believe in the quotation given in the title? Support your answer with enough reasoning, please.

As for me, I am almost nocturnal like an owl ! But recently, I am giving up this

habit, though I love it!

You know, I am used to staying up late at night and staying in bed till late in the

morning. Hardly I can stay awake early in the morning, though I can count days

when I woke up early and stayed awake in the morning.

I do know that this habit of mine is not good both for health and wealth, as the

saying says.

You know, if you want to be employed somewhere, normally you have to go to work early in the morning, though there exist some kind of jobs where your work-hours are not in the morning.

Banks, schools ,universities and many offices normally start in the morning. So the earlier you prepare yourself to do your chores and official work, the better.

At university, I had some classes which began at 7:30 in the morning. As far as I remember, I used to be late for those courses and it's really bad and embarrassing. So I have to change my favorite habit of staying late at night, since it interferes with my daily life. It keeps me behind in life. So it is a must to give it up. I am on the track of being used to a new lifestyle, since I am lessening the hours at night when I am awake. But to tell the truth, I can't fall asleep so soon. Usually, I have to have my handsfree in my ears listening to radio, music or some other stuff so that I can sleep. I know those waves emitting through my cell phone are harmful to health, but it's the best and only way for me to put me in peace and rest so that I can sleep !

You know when you rest enough at night, there is no reason to stay in bed till late in the morning. Get enough sleep and get refreshed so that you have the favorite efficiency of yours.

I've heard sth about the biological clock and its harmony with the nature's light and warmth. At night it's cooler and more comfortable to rest. During the day, you have daylight and the sun's abundant energy.(You can find articles on such a topic by googling it.) So from scientific point of view, and in harmony with nature, we'd better rest at night and do our chores during the day.

(Check this post if you like)

Another point about the saying is that our mind is more ready and at peace for learning early in the morning rather than any other time. Early in the morning, your mind is in peace, no happenings and no news yet. You've just woken up with a mind which has been in peace and rest at night, and you hardly remember bad thoughts and bad events occurred to you in the past. So you can learn and study with more concentration. If you don't agree with that, it's because you are used to another style , like me. I myself think that I can study better at night because of its peace and silence. But, my stress is higher then. The earlier you do your chores and studies, the more relaxed and calm you are.

Well, to wrap it up, I do believe in the saying that "early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." Naturally we are designed to sleep in darkness and be active during existence of daylight, just as work-hours of the enormous sun! Yet, I can't deny that we are flexible creatures and we can decide when to sleep and when not to. But we'd better be in harmony with nature, hadn't we?

Have fun,

Enjoy your life at peace

Hi zarah

This blog fits me best. It really does fit me!! Staying late at night is an old habit when it comes to ME, sigh!

Yeah I do stay late at night and I have been this way for almost 7 years, more or less. I like it perhaps because I'm used to it, as simple as that. I wish I were that kind of people who sleep early and get up early because I wholeheartedly believe that it's the best for our health. We have an idiom in Arabic that expresses almost the same meaning. I really wish to come over this habit, but ,you know, old habits die hard. Lucky you to start getting rid of this habit:) Carry on you are doing just the right thing.

This time of blog can't be real ! :D Actually I'm trying these days to get into the habit of sleeping early and rising early. My sleep yesterday was awful. But today morning, I woke up early to pray Fajer and then I determined to not sleep back. But I knew if I didn't do anything could let my desire of sleeping go away, I would back to sleep again and this is not what I really want. So I jumped to my laptop surfing internet.

For me, I'm nocturnal too. I used to stay at night until the sun rises and sometimes more, especially in vacations. I made all my classes late at noon starting from 12 p.m, because I wasnot able to wake up and be at university on time. But I didn't like what I was doing. When I woke up, I did feel so lazy that cannot do a thing beside sleeping all the day along. My lunch would be my dinner hehehe. So I tried once to get used of sleeping early, since I like experiencing new things hehe. I was happy of the result. I did feel more energetic and I could even kill hehehe just kidding. But there was something happened backed me to my nocturnal style and then I felt the difference. That's why I'm trying now to change my life style and I think I'm happy with the diurnal one.

Thanks for the amazing blog at this exact time ! ^_^

Have a nice day

Hi,
It's actually a very important topic for people.I would like to sleep early but I cann't because my family sleep lately.Acorrding to our religion we have to sleep early and wake up early because we have prayers at certain times.
I think If we wake up early we feel that we have a long day and we can do many things.Actually, we have many things to do because life is very short.
thanks for your good topic.

Dear Zahra, do you remember Bomzee, the lovely bear who sleeps no matter where he is? I am like Bomzee whenever my body rings and announces that I need to sleep, I sleep without considering the location. Once I went to a movie theatre to watch an action movie. It started at 8 and was supposed to be finished at 11. I suddenly slept in the middle of the movie with all the Dolby sound system! So, I sleep like a bear and I love my sleep! If I don't get enough sleep, it's better not to see me the next day! hahahahah! take care,

For me, I, um, actually I am not sleep at night, I usually sleep in the morning. At two or three in the morning is usually my bed time. It's just because I love working at night - when everyone in their bed. Very silent! I love it! And, to tell you the truth, my computer usually run faster at night, that's the true reason.

hi dear zahra

that was really nice and exactly right state.

as we have a proverb too (saharkhiz bash ta ......)I do agree that early to bed make u health...

I fortunately go to bed early and mosly wake up early.the days that I wake up late ,ruins till night and I  really do not enjoy that.

I hope we all get this lesson carefuly from old and previous generation that how much they are more healthy than us,the main reason can be going to bed early and rising early.so try to be early bird.

Hi Zehra, you made me shy (or perhaps embarrassed) by saying that you took this quotation from my page...^_*

Why, because I hardly sleep at night.............^_^

By the way, I really like this quotation,

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man a rooster in disguise! (It's really true, no doubt about that ^_* )

Now the question answer session ^_^ ,

1. Do you stay awake till late at night? Why?

Yeah, I do. Why, no reason actually. Perhaps I enjoy it, that's all.

2. Do you like staying/sitting up late at night? Why?

Yes, I like staying up late at night. Why, for the same reason which I've mentioned in my first answer, i.e. I probably enjoy it.

3. Which one do you like more for your sleep time? Mornings or nights? Which one do you think is better for your health and wealth ?!

Although I hardly sleep at night, however; I like nights for sleeping. A night's sleep is of course better for health and wealth.

4. Do you believe in the quotation given in the title? Support your answer with enough reasoning, please.

Yeah, I believe in the quotation. After a night's sleep, you not only feel refreshed, it is also in synchrony with your internal body clock. Many essential hormones are produced in the body when we are asleep. Darkness is a crucial factor for production of these hormones, and sunlight hinder the proper production of these hormones. Moreover, God has made night for sleeping, so of course it's beneficial for our health because our Creator has chosen it for sleeping. Nights are usually calmer and colder as compared to day, so they are perfect for a sound sleep.

By the way, I really enjoyed reading your lovely post. You yourself have answered the questions in a very nice way!
