How to use "writeboard"

Using writeboard

Today I want to share with you something that I have fond very useful. It is called writeboard (http://writeboard.com/) and this post has been done using it. Writeboard is collaborative software and completely free. With it you can collaborate with your friends on a written project.

collaborative = accomplished by collaboration: a collaborative report; collaborative efforts

collaborate = to work with someone else on a joint project

Our blogs in My EC are a place we hope to share our thoughts and hopefully catch our mistakes before we post them We do have the option to go back and edit our bog posts so we can remove embarrassing mistakes.

This is a great tool we can use to track changes in our work and never lose the original by accident. Also our collaborators can make changes which we can see to accept, reject, or modify. I wish something like this had been available when I was working on my graduate degrees. It would have been so good if my professors could have seen that they were making the same suggestions over and over. One professor would mark up my writing, which I would change to his satisfaction. Then the other professor would change the wording back to my prior version or something close to it to meet his expectations. Over and over this went on with the person making changes to favor his own interest while the other would change emphasis to his field of study. By the end I was careful to follow suggestions exactly and then had them striking out their own words from a week or two before. I can LOL about this now, but then it was devastating.

You can avoid endless changes from friends and advisors by using writeboard. All the previous changes are there to be seen, and after a few versions your collaborators can see what you added and what each of them added. That way agreement can be reached without anyone getting their ego in the way :p

Comment by Mr. Bob on October 17, 2010 at 19:59: Thank you Nadira. I should have waited to publish it. I posted it minutes before the Malware and Virus post which I rushed to completion when I saw how many friends were losing their computers to viruses.

As a result, everyone hurried to study about malware and didn't see the post from just before. The main trick to collaborating with writeboard is that you need your friend's email address to send them the password and link.

Thank you for sharing “writeboard”. I created a writeboard, and I’m trying to write this comment using it. I’m not good at writing English, so I usually make lots of mistakes. I need to check my work and correct mistakes. It’s great that I can see my mistake and correction at the same time. I think it’s very useful to realize how I make a mistake. It helps to prevent the same mistakes. I want to collaborate with my friends someday. I could know many different ideas or expressions for one thing.

Those screen shots may look like a web page you can click on, but they are just a photo for illustration.
I hope you were trying to use those and missed the actual link. Please try the link that is in the second sentence. It just worked fine for me. If it is not working it may be related to internet problems or someone is blocking it in Kandahar.

Those are some good questions. This is more like the group for photos with a story where we were going to have contests where 2 or more people worked together on a story.

That way you give someone you are working with access by putting in their email. The writeboard software then emails them with a password. That way it knows who is making the changes so it can keep the versions straight. If you message me with your email, I will set you up with one of my writeboards. You can change anything or delete or make suggestions. If I later wished to go with my version I could ignore all of yours, If you deleted the entire thing I could still get it back. The best part is if we wanted to work together and help each other we could actually get it done without fear of losing any part of it.
Here I made some changes to my blog on computer virus problems. You can see when I asked to compare versions:

It shows what changes were made. If you had changed some it would have said Hardi edited at 4:41 PM.
I don't usually do all the formatting and just export as HTML to my blog. From there I can add the bold and underline as necessary. This is very good for what it was meant to do. Google docs may be best for your things you do by yourself.

Comment by Hardi on October 2, 2010 at 22:05: It still have a big flaw too, the wirteboard can't be set public for read, so only the ones who know the password can access it.

So i should give password to everyone, or upload the latest version somewhere else and then keep updating it every time when changes are made.. I guess I still have to use google doc then.

It's pretty cool.. although the formating is a bit.. to long to type. But it's rarely not so often needed anyways.
