Is a Chat Moderator a Chat Murderator?

Howdy Folks

For some time I have been closing observing  all that ado going on about chat moderators deleting posts and suspending chatters and here is how I came to the final conclusion:

When Heaven evolved into a chat moderator, I was baffled and  pretty much confused , if not totally flabbergasted.  In the beginning of the whole affair, I even had a grudge against her - like being betrayed by one of my good friends. But as time passed, I noticed that the chat changed, and it went for the better. This provoked me to have a second thought over this issue.  In doing so, I had to fight ambivalent feeling…are mods spoilsports, showing off their POWER over us and victimizing us, the helpless chatters with their whims…or are they doing what the site Administration and Founder want them to do.

During my rumination, it became clear that the primordial reason of all this ado was not abiding to the principles laid out in the chat rules [chatiquette]. Every new member of the MyEnglishCub must get himself acquainted with them, and having accepted them, thereby we pledge to comply to them.

One may argue that they are not fair or do not suit his likes…very well…then such  persons should not take part in the chat.  I am inclined to agree that what some think fair, another may see it unfair, nevertheless, neither the  ambivalence nor the ambiguity of terms and expressions can be considered good reason for breaking the chat rules.

Here I would like to take the liberty and deliberate over what may be seen as abusive or insulting in one case doesn’t have to be so in another instance, all  , for  example, if I say : This was a stupid decision – well… it may seem offensive, depending on the general context, am I commenting my own deed or somebody’s else.  There will be no ambiguity if I say – It wasn’t a wise decision.  Calling people names is not something that I would call friendly or polite, especially if done in a public place. I may call somebody  a fool when we are alone, but in public it is impolite,  even be it said to my best friend.

Another example of so often encountered in the EC chat room – Somebody comes in and hoots from the doorway…Boooooooooriiiiiiiing….wow – really friendly and eloquent way of saying “Hi”.  The other equally intelligent and friendly  way of making yourself visible in the chat is flooding and spamming…  Imagine being with some friend  chatting when someone starts a word ping-pong game with somebody…irritating is the least what can be said about it.  Or if somebody starts repeating over and over the same sentence, expression or  incoherent sounds.  I will not mention speaking in a language that the remaining people in the group cannot understand….that’s just bellow any criticism.

For the reasons mentioned above, chat rules have been set out  by the administration of social sites and abiding to them is just the expected behavior of well mannered people, who take into consideration the feeling of the others….So if I am to say what I think of the mods in our chat room, I most decisively would say that they are doing a good job, …or at least Heaven is as she actively takes part in the chat and her attitude is worth copying.

Hi River

You see, if u enter a closed group of people you have no right to impose your own likes and like nots, if you are an intellligent and well mannered person, you will soon find out that is acceptable and what is not acceptable in that group. Should you say that you don't give a damn for their rules and start behaving otherwise, then you are simply abusing them, belittling their views ...and this is far from being polite or freindly...Here in Poland we say don't preach your bible in a different shrine...

The main thing is that the moderators reflect the wish of the administration and whatever the moderator does, he/she is on the right side of the barricade and you are on the wrong side of it..that is the rule..No matter how the "culprits' moan and lament...they are the rule breakers...

Howdy

It is a very good writing, I don't think I can write any better than you. Many things happened here and people are talking about it and even wrote blogs to express their feelings about being suspended or their complaint to the moderator. I witnessed what happened with Dia and I said my opinion about that already to the person in charge so I won't say anything here. From what I noticed, members and moderators have a different idea or limit and that is why they are complaining. Members don't think they have done something wrong, but moderators think the opposite. Referring to what you have written:

I am inclined to agree that what some think fair, another may see it unfair, nevertheless, neither the  ambivalence nor the ambiguity of terms and expressions can be considered good reason for breaking the chat rules.

Is there any idea from you how to minimalise this ambivalence or the ambiguity of terms and expressions so when one member get suspended then it is what he deserve to get and he doesn't have to gather people supporting him and creating drama as I might be doing if I feel there is an injustice over me.
