One day a servant of King Solomon came to him while he was very worried and fearful.
He told the King, "This morning when I was looking into the mirror, I saw the Angel of Death while he was looking at me in a fierce way. I am very afraid and worried. I think that he came for my soul. Please help me."
King Solomon said, "What do you want from me?"
The man asked the King, "Please send me to a faraway land, so far that The Angel of Death cannot find me today. Please send me to India so that I'll be safe."
King Solomon summoned the Angel of Wind and ordered him to take his servant to India immediately. In a blink of an eye the man disappeared and was gone where he wanted to go.
The Angel of Death came to King Solomon later that day and King asked him, "You looked at one of my servants today, is that true?”
"Yes," replied the Angel, "I was surprised to see him here, because I was ordered to take his soul from a place in India!"
P.S. Some say Destiny is not a matter of chance, it's a matter of choice. It's not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be acheived. Did the Servant choose his destiny?

I totally agree with Free Will's point of view when he says that actions have consequences. This point is called Karma. What you do/say today will come back to you tomorrow. So if you want to see good tomorrow, do good today. And one can take this as a proof that we are in control of our future.
On the other hand, not everything is in our control, things that are called inevitable. Things that happen and embrace us with them without our ever having planned for them. Death is an example, birth is another. We are born in one part of the world and we couldn't have done anything to change it. Marriage, most of the times, is another example. Many a time people are put in the path of each other and that becomes the start of new relationships, without ever having planned for it. Accidents or works of God are another examples. These things are different from Karma. We all have heard the sentence, "To be at the wrong place at the wrong time" which by itself means we are victim of a situation, a destiny, a fate. Following those inevitables, we may do things that look like we are in control of our destiny (and we do have some control in our lives), but we wouldn't have acted or behaved that way, should that incident hadn't happened in the first place; what we did was a consequence of another thing having happened earlier.
Comment by Free Will on January 27, 2013 at 19:55 I believe that destiny is changeable and avoidable as well. Our happiness and our misery are dominated by our good or evil deeds. In most cases, what we face today is a result of what we did earlier. Therefore, we can change our destinies by changing our actions or choices. We not only decide our own destinies but also the destinies of the others. Since we live and work together, our decisions will affect the life of every one of us. It is important to say, that we might be fully unaware that we play a major role in making our dreams come true. No doubt, that achieving goals is a very good example of our capacity in controlling destiny. When it comes to death, the matter is different, because death is inevitable. It is obvious that inevitable incidents are unavoidable. Thank you Faraz for this lofty topic.

Comment by Sunil Jogdeo on January 27, 2013 at 5:36 WOW, great sharing...destiny is called `niyati` in our local language Marathi. Servant cannot choose destiny, its destiny who selects things on behalf of us, however, with our strongest desire, knowledge and focus we can force destiny to give us what we want..however, for this also destiny needs to design things for us..enjoyed.
